"In this new era of social media, we have yet to rise to the point of displaying the best of our humanity.  …

This page has a few quotes that readers probably haven't seen anywhere else. These quotes are documented with (1) the individual who said or wrote the memorable phrase and (2) the source to ensure accuracy and authenticity.

Two quotes are included here. Follow the link or select the image to read more.
Image of a book with the tagline:
"The president who thinks that his company exists mainly to supply stock quotations is in exactly the same case with the workman who looks at his day's work not as a means of doing something, but as a means of getting money without exertion."
Samuel Crowther

Common Sense and Labor, 1920
"Wealth can no more be safely created and permanently held by the mere shuffling of securities, than character can be created by shuffling cards."
John Wanamaker

Past Mistakes Can Yield Better Foresight

Picture of hands producing fire as a symbol of being burned by a mistake with the tagline:
Hindsight is always more certain than foresight.   . . .

. . . But the hindsight gained from being "singed by fire" is good training for acquiring foresight.
Herbert Hoover and Hugh Gibson,
The Problems of Lasting Peace

But only if we learn from those mistakes that "singe" us, and as Tom Watson expected . . . don't make the same mistake twice.

Judge Elbert H. Gary on "Listening" to the Stock Market

11/21/2020

"Gentlemen, we do not manage our corporation for the stock market. . . .
Picture
"If I were a speculator on the Stock Exchange, buying today in the hope of selling tomorrow, . . . I might be glad to have the management of a corporation take some action in . . . declaring dividends . . . which temporarily advanced the prices of securities. . . .

"[Then] leaving management to shoulder the trouble—if it came afterwards … [and] the action proved to have been improvident."

IBM has spent $201 billion since 1995 on share buybacks (repurchases). I wonder if Arvind Krishna and James M. Whitehurst wish they had some of those dollars spent by their three predecessors on paper to now invest in people, processes and products

America Divided and the Path to Regaining Unity

9/5/2020

Unity does not come from laws or charters or treaties.
Picture of hands joined.
These merely record agreement in thinking, purpose, and action. Unity comes from within the people or it does not exist.

Character and good behavior are the foundation of unity.
Thomas J. Watson Sr., "Unity,"

THINK Magazine, June 1946

When was the last time we heard a presidential candidate talk about the need for individual character, individual good behavior and accepting personal responsibility for an individual's actions? Shouldn't our presidential candidates set the example for such important traits? Is that why those who exhibit such irresponsible actions make us feel so divided as a country . . . when they, themselves, exhibit so little character, good behavior, and responsibility . . . whether in our leadership positions . . . or out on our streets?

To men and women of character, the means by which we achieve an end matters.

We can make "unity" exist again: through character, good behavior and responsibility.

Thomas J. Watson Sr.: On Leadership

"The true leader of a nation, a private enterprise or a family realizes that the success of his leadership is dependent upon the growth and development of those whom he leads. ...
Picture of young tree sapling.
"The real leader is an assistant first. He is zealous in his effort to give his associates the best that is in him. By example and through education he builds men. ...

"The stronger the individual in any group has an opportunity to become, and the more fully the individual is able to develop his character, the stronger the leader of that group will become.

"Leaders draw strength from those whom they lead."

Ida M. Tarbell: On Armament - and Indirectly - Gun Control

8/25/2020

"Take away a man's gun and it is no guarantee that he will not strike if aroused.
Picture of old book with tagline: Ida M. Tarbell,
"You must get at the man—enlarge his respect for order, his contempt for violence, change his notion of procedure in disputes, establish his control.

"It takes more than "gun toting'' to make a dangerous citizen, more than relieving him of his gun to make a safe one."
Ida M. Tarbell, "Peacemakers: Blessed and Otherwise," 1922

It is hard to believe that truer words were ever written. It is easy to pass laws, but much harder to have the discussions—we need to have—to change men's and women's hearts. Only the latter approach leads to a foundation upon which to build a strong foundation for democracy.

A Chief Executive Officer Empowers Employee-Owners

Picture of dandelion seeds blowing in the wind with the tagline:
This was the premise behind Thomas J.
"He [the chief executive officer] must have not only executive assistance, but discretionary assistance—that is, people who will take charge of their sections and conduct them as if they owned them.

"[Those] ... who will not merely carry out orders, but who will initiate on their own account and then carry through."
