These authors and writers published books worthy of note in areas of interest that it makes them hard to classify in other categories on this website. So this webpage serves as a catch-all for books that cover topics of interest but the authors, themselves, defy classification. As an example, the first author published on this page was John S. Wise. His book, "End of an Era" is a splendid book covering the effects of the Civil War on Mr. Wise's family, friends, state, and political beliefs, but it was hard to classify John S. Wise, as an individual, in any particular category such as capitalist, industrialists, politician, etc. . . .

John S. Wise
|
In 1864, he entered the service of the Confederate Army as a lieutenant. After the war he took the law course at the University of Virginia, from which he received a diploma in 1867.
He first came into public notice as United States district attorney for the Eastern district of Virginia to which he was appointed in 1881 by President Chester A. Arthur. In the same year, he was elected to Congress on the Republican ticket and four years later ran for governor of Virginia but was defeated.
Mr. Wise moved to New York in 1888, where he practiced law. A wit, a popular after dinner speaker and successful in his profession, he has found time to write several books. “The End of the Era” is reviewed on this website. |
