It may seem strange to include art books in this bibliography. Watson Sr., though, was truly convinced that if men could just understand each others cultures, dreams and aspirations, maybe peace would have a chance. In my research, I do find an amazing amount of goodwill that resulted from these worldwide art exhibits.
Their construction was also unique. Watson didn't want the best art; he wanted the best art from within a geographic region to represent its local people: a very proletarian approach for a modern day industrialist.

We once more affirm our faith that through the language of the artist, people will be better able to recognize those traits common to all men which bind humanity together in universal kinship.
Tom Watson Sr., April 1, 1948, The Winona Republican Herald
Painting is one of the truest records of a people. When we see what painters reveal, it increases our hope for better understanding among the peoples of the earth. We believe that all who view these paintings will recognize, through the many different forms of expression, traits common to all men which bind humanity together in universal kinship.

Sculpture of the Western Hemisphere
The American nations are joined today in a common cause. Unparalleled efforts and sacrifices are being made by their peoples to protect all the fine things which have been developed in our hemisphere. The records left by potter and carver tell us of the ancient past. Ceramist and sculptor of today will report in the future; but they also speak now of contemporary times and ways of life.
This collection has been assembled in order to give our people an opportunity to see what is being done by the sculptors of all the countries of the Western Hemisphere. We gratefully acknowledge the assistance rendered us by government officials, museum directors, art authorities and others who have collaborated in this work. Thomas J. Watson Sr., Foreword, Sculpture of the Western Hemisphere

Contemporary Art of the Western Hemisphere
"Since art is one of the truest means for revealing the heart and mind of a people it logically should play an increasingly important part in the development of a more thorough understanding between our countries. We in the United States feel a strong sense of hemisphere pride when we reflect on the achievements of our neighbors.
"We are particularly proud of all that Canada has done to advance American culture, including the creation of a style of painting wholly native to her soil. This exhibition represents the third phase of our company's plan to stimulate a closer relationship between business and art, and to foster among peoples a greater familiarity with each others aesthetic development." Thomas J. Watson Sr., Foreword, Contemporary Art of the Western Hemisphere
